Along with the common dating tips - take separate cars, let other people know your plans - try something new: a professional background search. Option 1: Basic Background Check Any time you are meeting someone you do not know personally, do a basic background check, even if that person is the friend of a friend. A basic background check is a simple report that covers two critical areas: - Criminal histories Criminal histories contain exactly the information that you expect: types of charges, sentences, and places where the offense occurred. As part of the criminal description, it also provides a physical description of the person, their date of birth, and both their real name and any aliases. Most criminal searches look for federal arrests and arrests within a single state; additional state searches can be added for an extra fee. With dating - especially someone you haven't met - a criminal background check is your number one means of protection. Ten percent of men and 1% of women have felony records, and even more have misdemeanors. And dating services do not do any criminal screening. A basic background search is cheap, less than $40, and you can get the information almost immediately. That is a very small price to pay for an extra measure of safety. It may be wise to get a little more information about the person you're meeting, information easily faked or not included in a dating service profile. Some people search companies offer a special dating report, which is a combination of different types of search reports: - Marriage and divorce records The most obvious information to get is whether a person is married. An enhanced marriage/divorce report shows the names and dates of a person's spouse, as well as the grounds for divorce (if any are given). Address histories are a staple with many different kinds of search reports. It's a list, usually going back about 10 years, of every place where a person is known to have lived. Often, these include other information about their living situation like relatives, roommates, and neighbors. Dating-focused searches also include publicly-available information about a person's holdings, like registered cars, boats, or airplanes, residential and commercial properties, even businesses. Occasionally, it is possible to access corporate records to create a partial employment history. If you're looking for a casual way to spend a Saturday, this level of information may not be necessary. If you are looking for a long-term relationship, possibly even a marriage with the package of kids and picket fences, it becomes a lot more important to make sure that the person has the honesty, sense of responsibility, and work ethic that you want in a partner. The Difference of a Professional Search The most common Internet search is for a person - two billion a month, about 30% of all searches. Running a name though a search engine, though, doesn't always get the results you need, unless you want to see stats from random high school basketball games. There are hundreds or thousands of people with the same name, with no way to tell them apart. This is where a professional background search is golden. It only takes a name, city, and approximate age to narrow down a search to a precise person and specific information. A professional background search company is different from a search engine or a phone directory. The results are narrowed to a single person and organized in a clear report. Any professional search runs through dozens of public and private databases, government registrations, phone directories, property taxes, utilities, and corrections records. These databases are updated frequently, so the information is good. Background searches simplify dating. A basic background search is a way to be safer as you date, even for a simple cup of coffee. A dating search report is a way to make sure you can start a relationship on even footing with an equal partner. If the information is available, be smart, and use it to your advantage.
