Spotted Eagle Rays Born in Captivity - Among Less Than 10 to Ever Be Captive Bred and Born
It is indeed a cause to celebrate when a threatened or near threatened species, being cared for by animal care professionals, gives birth in captivity. It not only gives visitors to those institutions an opportunity to see a beautiful creature in its youth, it also helps the species grow. January visitors to Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, Tenn. are enjoying a rare view of two young male spotted eagle ray pups swimming among hundreds of Indo-Pacific reef fish in the aquariums Coral Reef exhibit. Born during September 2008, the healthy siblings are believed to be among less than 10 to be captive bred or born anywhere in the world. - When born, each weighed less than three pounds and was less than 16 inches across. Adult spotted eagle rays (Aetobatis narinari) can grow to a size of 10 feet disc width and weigh up to 500 pounds. While they are considered one of the most graceful rays to watch, they are not as common as other ray species in public aquariums. In fact, only 15 aquariums worldwide exhibit the creatures. The two male pups were the first litter born from one of two females in the Ray Bay exhibit at the aquarium on Sept. 27, 2008. Upon their birth the pups were immediately moved from the exhibit to the marine science building at the aquarium and were cared for by marine biologists, making sure they stayed healthy and that they were eating well. The rays were trained to eat out of the hand of divers to help ensure they were eating enough and that they would be prepared for their new environment where they need to compete for food with hundreds of Indo-Pacific coral reef fishes. - The youngsters were introduced to their new environment, the Coral Reef exhibit, on December 9and quickly have become popular with aquarium guests. ?Visitors line up to watch them interact with divers as they are fed several times daily. - "While other species of rays and small sharks displayed along with the spotted eagle rays have regularly been reproducing, this is quite a landmark for us," said Frank Bulman, director of husbandry for Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies. ?He notes that the spotted eagle rays in the Ray Bay exhibit have been part of an ongoing research project involving monthly ultrasonographic examinations to monitor their pregnancies. "They may have been pregnant in the past but we were never aware of it. Once we found out they were by using sonogram, we were able to keep an eye on them and provide them special care. Regular monthly sonograms are now being taken to monitor any future pregnancies." ?? Widely considered one of the most beautiful rays, the spotted eagle ray is found worldwide in tropical and warm temperate waters. It is listed as "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a global union of states, governmental agencies, and non-governmental organizations in a partnership that assesses the conservation status of species. Near threatened means that the species is close to qualifying for or is likely to qualify for a threatened category?in the near future. - The adult spotted eagle ray has a striking spotted pattern across the top side that can be easily seen against its dark body. Its bottom side is white. The ray has a long, flat and somewhat rounded snout, a thick head, sharp corners, and a row of flat, V-shaped teeth. Each has a long whip-like tail, with a long poisonous spine near the base, behind the small dorsal fin. - Spotted eagle rays are commonly seen in bays and around coral reefs and spend most of their time swimming in schools while they are in open, warm waters.Unfortunately, these little guys are going to go through a public life with no name. It seems professional husbandry folk don't get into that naming thing. When asked their names, - Bulman simply noted that "We typically do not name our animals. Their accession numbers are GB-AN-08-01-M and GB-AN-08-02-M." - So, say hi to my favorite, GB-AN-08-01-M when you visit! Tim O'Brien is vice president of communications for Ripley Entertainment, owners of the two Ripley's aquariums.
